How Do You Store Your Movie Posters? FAQ Guide

How Do You Store Your Movie Posters? FAQ Guide

We often get questions asking how movie posters should be stored. We go into a little bit of detail here to describe how our process works. We are obviously storing 100s of movie posters at any one time so our setup may be very different for a collector. We are also likely to go further than required in terms of safe storage of the posters than the average collector but each person will have their own risk tolerance. Find out a little more about our process here.

Do you keep your movie posters rolled or flat?

We take the storage of our movie posters extremely seriously. We store every single one of our posters flat and never keep them rolled. Whilst there is nothing wrong with keeping your rolled movie posters in rolled tubes, we believe the best way is to keep them flat. We have found that some sellers will keep and send as many as 40 posters in a single tube which can create crease lines if not stored properly. Furthermore, sellers such as these will have to constantly take out, unroll and pull out posters that they need to ship. This can inadvertently damage other posters the more this is done.

Our most valuable/ oldest posters are stored individually in special Mylar sleeves. This is done to ensure even better protection as these sleeves are not just anti acid like our boxes but also completely waterproof.

Can I keep my movie posters in the poster tubes you send me?

Yes! Whilst we ourselves do not store our movie posters rolled for the reasons listed above, there is nothing wrong at all with you storing them rolled in tubes. In fact, our postal tubes have been custom made by one of our packaging partners specifically for us. If you do not have suitable flat storage space, then storing them in our tubes is the next best thing! We would also advise to keep your posters wrapped in the other materials that we send our posters out in. These have been specifically selected with our packaging partners to help keep your posters protected from naturally occurring oils, acid and other compounds that may affect the integrity of the poster.

What's the science behind your storage?

For those who want a little more technical data on our storage mechanisms to ensure we are committed to the very best storage standards possible, we can confirm that all of our storage boxes used have the following qualities:

  • Contain a 3% calcium carbonate buffer to protect from acidity.
  • Fully PAT tested (Photographic activity test).
  • Are made from durable cardboard which is tested to be acid free and lignin free.

The qualities of the storage methods we use help protect against dust, acid migration from the atmosphere and other harmful ingresses.

How should I handle my movie posters?

There is a reason that we ship high quality white cotton gloves with every single movie poster that we sell. These gloves are invaluable as they help stop the transfer of natural oils from your skin onto the movie poster. We highly recommend using these gloves whenever you are touching, moving or handling your poster. We at Famous Movie Posters always use gloves whenever we are touching, packing or hanging a poster.

Can you supply me with the packing materials you use?
