1970s and 1980s

Original Movie Posters From The 1970s and 1980s

The 1970s and 1980s were transformative decades for cinema, shaping modern filmmaking with bold storytelling and technical innovation. The 1970s saw the rise of auteur directors like Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola, delivering masterpieces like Taxi Driver and The Godfather. Star Wars revolutionised sci-fi, while Jaws created the summer blockbuster. The 1980s embraced spectacle, with iconic action films like Die Hard and The Terminator, alongside adventure classics like Indiana Jones. Spielberg and John Hughes dominated, blending heartfelt storytelling with entertainment. From gritty dramas to high-energy blockbusters, these decades left a lasting impact on popular culture and filmmaking.
The 1970s and 1980s were also transformative years in the production and distribution of movie posters. Before the 1980s, most movie posters were folded and sent out to cinemas in envelopes. This practice began to change in the 80s as posters were rolled and sent out in tubes, therefore eliminating the crease lines.
The end of the 1980s also saw the beginning of the widespread introduction of double sided poster printing for the display in cinema lightboxes. This increased the perceived contrast and brought more attention to the individual posters for passers by. As always, all of our movie posters are 100% original and we do not sell any reproductions!
